Short and Tantalizing

More Spam. What can I say? It amuses me.

I am Mr. Liu Wang from Taipei, Taiwan capital. I seek your partnership

What I like about this one is the brevity combined with the ambiguity. One sentence for context, one sentence for purpose. And no articles--this is a man/bot who doesn't have time to waste on such unnecessary frivolities. But at the same time--there's a mystery. What kind of partnership? Business or... something more? Oh, Mr. Liu Wang, your circumspect coyness intrigues me.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (F.B.I.) waded in. I hope they wore their water-wings.

A university email address that found its way onto multiple spam lists is a gift that just keeps on giving. It gives spam. Or, in this case, it gives me another installment of Spamlysis. Which is now a thing.

The spam in question (it's a long one, so just skim over and I'll present a summary):

It has been discovered that your contract/inheritance/winning FUND was about being transferred to an unknown account under your name. This attempt was perpetrated by someone who claims to be working for you, and that you have given him due authority to have the FUND moved to the account specified below:
SOUTHWESTERN FEDERAL CREDIT UNION
WESCORP 924 OVERLAND COURT
SAN DIMAS, CA 91772. USA.
ACCOUNT NUMBER: 322682133
ABA/ROUTING NUMBER: 1211-71-41-8
SHARETYPE NO.: 35
FINAL CREDIT JOHNSON FENZI AND CO. (Beneficiary).
The Federal Bureau of Investigation (F.B.I.) waded in after being alerted by the supposed bank. We investigated and found that there is a possible money laundering activity in play. The FUND US$10,500,000.00(Ten Million Five Hundred Thousand United States Dollars) was found to be deposited in Bank of America in your name pending your consent to have it transferred to the new account indicated above. It was further revealed that initial FUND transfer originated from Nigeria to England and now here in Bank of America in USA.
These transfers did not follow due process in line with the international FUND transfer rules and regulation.Consequently,we suspect this be a terrorism funding, drug related fund deposit and/or money laundering. As stated above, the FUND has your name on it; and you must have it cleared of any connection with any of these illegal activities.Be informed that FAILURE to have this cleared out will attract a JAIL TERM.We will not hesitate to visit the full weight of the law upon you if you do not clear this fund. There is every indication that you are involved in this shady deal.
Finally, you are expected to have the CLEARANCE DOCUMENT obtain from where the FUND originated from to have you and your fund cleared. To this end,you are to contact Mr. Henry Evans of the Anti Graft Department of Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (E.F.C.C.) Essentially, it's an elaboration of the standard Nigerian prince spam, with the added twist being that if I don't respond, the FBI will assume that I'm involved in a terrorist-related money laundering scheme, and prosecute accordingly. In other words, it adds a stick to the existing carrot. It's an interesting twist, but I think it goes too far in complicating the issue. The hook of the Nigerian scam is that it plays on people's willingness to "pull one over" on the poor Nigerian prince by accepting a deal that is more favorable to the addressee than the prince. The FBI tact draws attention to the underhanded nature of the scheme. The FBI thinks it's shady? Of course they do--that's because it's obviously shady whenever someone offers you millions of dollars for nothing. By drawing attention to this aspect so clearly, it may put off those it sought to entice. Rather, I'd argue that the better approach would be to go all stick: acknowledge that Nigerian scam is just a scam, but that the addressee has been implicated in it, and must give out all their personal information to clear their name. Either way, it hinges on the notion that invoking the FBI is a good thing to do, which may not be the case when you're employing an Internet scam the FBI would probably be very interested in.

Three points of fine rhetoric:
1) Nigeria does, indeed, have a Department of Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, but there's no word on whether their anti-grafting wing is vigilant enough to be up for the job.
2) I like the use of capitalized words. They form a nice bulletpoint summary: FUND, FUND, FUND, FUND, FAILURE, JAILTERM, CLEARANCE DOCUMENT, FUND, FUND, DIPLOMATIC IMMUNITY SEAL of TRANSFER (DIST) CLEARANCE DOCUMENT.
3) They're using the actual director of the FBI, which is its own level of chutzpah. But I'm not sure he sends out these emails personally. No word on whether Mr. Henry Evans is still with the Nigerian group, but according to Google, he is the recipient of the 2000 World Champion award in Card magic.

Maybe it's my soulful eyes

I do mean to return to my scheduled academic discussion soon but... well, it's the long weekend. Let's take our time. Specifically, let's discuss this piece of spam I received today:

To: yournotgettingmyemailaddressthis@easily.com
Reply-To: ceo.markhenry@ymail.com
Subject: Hello Beautiful

Hello,

I am looking for someone intelligent, ambitious, successful and not afraid of a challenge in a relationship. My ideal partner is very
attractive and has the maturity and self-confidence.

I'm looking for someone who considers herself extraordinary and wants the same. Someone educated, successful and ambitious and looking for a challenge in life
http://www.blogger.com/img/blank.gif
Mark
ceo.markhenry@ymail.com
Sgt Larry Wayne

There are several questions that arise. Do I have the maturity? What list has my email address been put on? Does Mark Henry know my blog is authored by a teenage girl between 18 and 25 years old? (Update: according to typeanalyzer.com, I am no longer a teenage girl, but a logical and analytical type. The plebians go on to say that I may appear "arrogant, impatient and insensitive to people that need some time to understand what you are talking about." Honestly, I don't know why I keep going to the proles for an opinion.) Why the repetition of "ambitious," "successful," and "challenge," but not "intelligent" or educated? What is the connection between CEO Mark Henry and Sgt Larry Wayne? Are they one and the same? Is it a pseudonym? Or are they two separate people? And if they are two separate people, exactly what sort of a relationship are they propositioning? What kind of a girl do they think I am?

So many questions. So few answers. Such is life.

Later Days.

Addendum: And no, it isn't entirely lost on me that I'm interrupting a series on academic professionalism to discuss some spam guy hitting on me. This is where that "deliberate choice to engage personal and professional" thing comes in.

Fwd: Re: FYI!!! YOU COULD ALWAYS ALREADY BE !NTERPELL@tTED!!!!!

I'm sitting in on a course looking at new media genres this term, and this week, we're looking at the email. I think the course itself is fascinating, as it really puts into perspective how many new forms of communication technology has provided over the past century or two. A telephone conversation is different from a face-to-face conversation is different from a Skype conversation. The convention for replying to an email is not the convention for replying to a letter. A show produced for online broadcast is not the same as a TV show. A podcast is not a radio show. And so on and so forth. And the studying these forms lead to new social understandings and opportunities. After all, this blog wouldn't exist if I hadn't signed up for a course a year back. For the class on email, we've been assigned the task of finding email how-to guides, and it's been illuminating to how much further the email genre can be broken down. There's guides for business emails, guides for friendly emails (and I love that society is in such a place that there are people who require a formula to write to a friend), and even guides for blind date emails.

But what about the other, neglected email genres? I envision a world where we will one day provide guides for the lesser known categories:
stalker-mail: Because on the Internet, you're always 300 feet away.

drunken email: All the fun of the drunken phone call, with the added bonus of delayed anxiety.

break-up email: "I think we should see other people. Let me know when you get this."

...okay, that's all I could think of. This is why I'm not writing a comedy blog. I'm not here to amuse you, dammit.
